Thompson Foundation scholarship (2008-2009) conduct research relating to the Silk Road which is the idea behind this exhibition. The lecture including with slide multi-vision.

About the exhibition:
The exhibition “Breaking out of the Cocoon, Growing out of Rice” presents the recent works of Montri Toemsombat, a contemporary young Thai artist who has gained prominent recognition for works including those incorporating rice as one of the medium. The sculptures, installation art, videos and photographs displayed in this exhibition were all made by the artist from leftover materials provided by the Jim Thompson Factory in Pakthongchai District, Nakornratchasima Province.

For this exhibition the artist invites viewers to enjoy a compilation of artworks created over the past decade from diverse natural materials. They reveal his perception of harmony as the essential factor bonding together life, society, culture and nature. According to the artist the lessons obtained from experiences can be transformed into elements that constitute a meaningful life. Inspired by nature and social political situation, he sees an analogy in the flight of the moth as a revolutionary phase evoked by its breaking out from the protective cocoon. And, he also interprets as a declaration of freedom the act of rice securing its young root in the earth while thrusting its first young leaf into the sky. The artist views these two natural phenomena as related to the nurturing of motherhood and the support of fatherhood which are the basic elements of humanity.

About the Artist:
Montri Toemsombat was born in 1975 in Chaiyaphum Province. He studied visual arts, specializing in Inter-media Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chulalongkorn University. He graduated in 1998. His debut artworks often use natural materials, such as rice and silk as the key components. A young rising artist, his extensive portfolio covers sculptures, installation arts, photographs, improvised arts and videos. His nationally and internationally exhibited works are widely acclaimed for their creativity and distinctiveness. His solo exhibitions include: Cocoon; the Renaissance (Ayara Hall, the Jim Thompson House, 1991), Fake Me (The Japan Foundation Art Gallery, Bangkok, 2002), New Fashion Order; Dissolution (Installation/ Performance, RMIT Project Space, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, 2005), Rice/Life, Ever-Presence (RoomX, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland, 2006).
He has also been invited to join in several international exhibitions, namely: "The 1st Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale", Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 1999; “L’Art Dans Le Monde”, Paris, France; “Biennale Internationale Design 2000”, France, 2000; "The 1st Tirana Biennale", Tirana National Musuem, Albania; the 5th Art Workshop with Khoj Workshop, Modinagar, New Delhi, India, 2001; "Under Construction; The New Dimension of Asian Art", the Japan Foundation Art Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, 2002; “Dreams and Conflicts", Thai Pavilion, 50th International Art Exhibition Venice Biennale / Venice, Italy, 2003; ARS 06, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland, 2006; Soka Contemporary Arts, Taipei, Taiwan, Busan Biennale 2008, Busan, South Korea; Jakarta Biennale 2009, Jakarta, Indonesia; and Basel, Switzerland, 2009. Along with saddle blankets, rugs and tools on display, a demonstration loom will be available for anyone interested in trying the Navajo way of weaving.

Ms Castellan first began weaving tapestries in 1982. After visiting the Navajo Reservation she was drawn to the artistry and beauty of Navajo textiles. She now specializes in weaving saddle blankets. She currently resides in Bangkok and her travels throughout South East Asia focus on ethnographic photography of tribal weaving practices and equipment. She received a Master of Health Science degree from the University of Toronto and is currently working toward a Master Weaver designation.

Dear Thai Textile Society Members,

The Jim Thompson Art Center cordially invites you to attend the discussion Hunting
Authenticity - Pseudo-Tourism by Pravit Rojanaphruk and Pasakorn Intoo-Marn and
moderated by Worathep Akkabootara on Saturday 19th June, 2010 at 14:00-16:00 at The
Jim Thompson Art Center.

This session will consider and re-evaluate notions which concern the existence and
status of “authenticity in tourism”. To underline the idea of “authenticity”,
concepts which came into question as early as the industrial revolution will be
explored in terms of how they are interrelated to modernity. The arguments on
authenticity can be drawn from considering mass tourism which has had a profound
impact on the experiences of tourists. In particular, we will consider how tourists
classify or evaluate their experience related to cultural authenticity. To classify
and evaluate such experiences, an audience should take the approach of
reinterpreting the experiences in terms of authenticity. For example, one can
consider the types of artifacts which are produced to serve a tourist’s interests.
Some of them are intentionally produced to be consumed as tourists’ art objects or
souvenirs. This discussion and the arguments involved can be better understood by
viewing the exhibition THE TROPICS: VIEWS FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE GLOBE. The
exhibition showcases pieces from the collection of The National Ethnological Museum
in Berlin. It also illustrates cultural and cult representations of the indigenous
peoples who are living in the tropical regions. In particular, the collection of art
from National Ethnological Museum reflects Eurocentric interpretation of the
tropics.

About the Collaborators:

Pravit Rojanaphruk: received a Master’s Degree in Social Anthropology from Oxford
University (Chevening Scholarship, The Ministry of Foreign Affair, Great Britain),
and wrote the dissertation “Tourist and Cultural Authenticity : Anthropological
Reflection on the Notion of Cultural Authenticity in Tourism”. He now works for the
Political News Section, The Nation. Pravit has traveled to over 40 countries and
has received other scholarships such as Reuters Fellowship, Oxford University and
Katherine Fanning Fellowship for Journalism and Democracy by Kettering Foundation,
Ohio, USA.

Pasakorn Inthumarn: received a Bachelor’s degree in Drama from Thammasat University
and Master’s Degree in Theatre and Film Studies from University of New South Wales,
Australia. He is interested in the role of art on society. He now regularly teaches
courses in Film Appreciation at the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University.

Worathep Akkabootara : received a Bachelor degree in Graphic Art and Art Theory
from The Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Art Silapakorn University He has
cooperated with cultural activists in several socially engaging projects and art
exhibitions and regularly works as an editor and writer on art and cultural topics
for books and magazines, published both locally and internationally. He is now
working as writer and editor for “Exemplar Editions”.

About The Tropics exhibition
“The Tropics – Views from the Middle of the Globe” attempts to detect currents of
energy and subtle disturbances between the hemispheres in times of tension, and to
search for cooperative as well as counteractive cultural forces. The exhibition has
already been presented in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Berlin.

Ranking among the most important in the world, exhibits from the collections of the
Ethnological Museum in Berlin from Africa, Asia, Oceania and tropical America enter
into dialogue with works by contemporary artists from South America, Europe, Africa
and Asia. Old and new art converge in one place. As the show is conceived as an art
exhibition, the selection of the older works was primarily made according to
aesthetic criteria. In general, the exhibition attempts a re-aesthetisation of the
tropics, in order to place more emphasis on cultural aspects of tropical regions, as
opposed to the otherwise prevailing negative political and economic discourses.

The Thai Textile Society invites you to a special visit to view the extensive collection of ethnic Tai clothing and textiles at the Office of Agricultural Museum and Culture, at Kasetsart University, one of the largest private collections in Thailand. After being welcomed by a performance of a Tai Lue dance, Ajarn Orathai Pholdi, museum director, will guide us on a tour of the 30 Tai groups, which include Tai Lue, Tai Daeng, Tai Dam, Lao Krang and Phu Tai. These textiles are displayed along with musical instruments and agricultural implements, highlighting the importance of the co-relations of these items in Tai culture.
Among the items on display are rare wedding dresses that once belonged to nobility of the Tai Yai of the Shan State in Myanmar. Other textiles represent various Tai groups from Yunnan in China, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand.
A light lunch will be served.
We will meet at the Dusit Thani Hotels lower lobby and travel by van to the University.
