Visit to the Textile Gallery & Exhibition Hall at Vimanmek Palace
Come and join Khun Chomporn Dhanesnittaya, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Thai Textile Society and Khun Wipawee Tiyawes, Textile Curator at Tilleke & Gibbins and member of the Steering Committee of the Thai Textile Society on a tour of the textile gallery at the HRH Princess Orathai Thepkanya Residential Hall and the Local Textile Exhibition Hall at the Vimanmek Palace.
The gallery at the HRH Princess Orathai Thepkanya Residential Hall houses an exquisite collection of royal and court fabrics used in the court of King Rama V such as Shanghai silk brocade, gold brocade, Pha Poom which is woven silk cloth with warp ikat designs. You will have the opportunity to learn the history of imported court textiles and to distinguish patterns specially ordered from India and Cambodia for the nobility and royalty. In addition, there is a collection of silk cloths woven under the auspices of Her Majesty the Queen�s SUPPPORT Foundation for your viewing pleasure. The Local Textile Exhibition Hall houses a wonderful collection of old and new textiles from all across Thailand. His Majesty the King granted permission to the Bank of Thailand to renovate this building to exhibit Thai textiles on the occasion of Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit's 6th cycle birthday, on 12th August 2004 to honour and commemorate Her Majesty's endeavors in reviving Thai arts and cultures, especially in the area of hand-woven textiles. After the textile tour, you may wish to tour the Vimanmek Mansion, the world�s largest golden teakwood mansion, and the other palace buildings at your own leisure.
